Urban Gardening cultivates Fresh Moves for inner city youth

“In hundreds of neighborhoods across the country, nutritious, affordable, and high quality food is out of reach—Minority families often reside in neighborhoods with few supermarkets or alternative healthy food options making fresh produce difficult to obtain.”

Unfortunately, this is the reality for many of the residents of Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood. Especially the youth, who struggle with obesity and poor nutrition, many times above the national average. Good nutrition and exercise go hand in hand.

Fresh Moves, a documentary by MadWerkz Producer/Director Christopher Kennedy explores the efforts of Glenville’s Fresh Camp, a program headed by native Dee Jay Doc that offers instruction in urban gardening, home economics and skill building (T-Shirt and DVD Label printing/design).

“You’ve got to relate to these kids at their level, so I bring the information to them using fun things like song construction, music production and performances. Combining Dance With Me’s proven techniques provided so much value for the kids!” Stated by Dee Jay Doc.

Indeed Fresh Moves was as much about bringing the worlds of Nehemiah Spencer’s confidence building and anti-bullying workshops to the Fresh Camp crew which resulted in an amazing collaboration of modern dance, hip hop and its powerful performance at Cleveland’s Wade Oval Wednesday Summer Series.

In the end, first time director Chris Kennedy captures the diverse range of Fresh Camp and Dee Jay Doc’s efforts along with the heartfelt personal engagement of professional dancer Nehemiah Spencer in the lives of his students and aiding those who many deem unseen.

Fresh Moves is produced by TenderHearts Crusades, produced by Obadiah Baker and Christopher Kennedy with a general support from Neighborhood Connections, The Ohio Arts Council and MadWerkz Studios. Catch Fresh Moves in festival now.
